Eighth Air Force. Transfer of Headquarters, VIII Fighter Command
from Bushey Hall to Charleroi begins. Headquarters is to provide
administrative and operational support for fighters groups
operating with Ninth Air Force on tactical support missions.
Ninth Air Force. All combat operations, except a defensive
patrol by 4 fighters, are cancelled because of bad weather.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium
bombers hit bridges at Lavis and Calliano. Fighters and fighter-bombers
interdict Po Valley command and hit ammunition dump at San
Felice del Benaco. During
3-4
January 1945, light bombers successfully hit stores dump and
bridge near Mestre, and destroy or damage over 50 vehicles.
Fifteenth Air Force. 370 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers bomb marshalling yards at Verona (2), Bronzolo (2),
Vicenza, Padua (2), Trento, and Bolzano, and station sidings
at Trento. 54 P-38 Lightning fighters attempt high-level bombing
of Cismon del Grappa but fail to hit target. 9 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers drop supplies in Yugoslavia. P-38 Lightning
fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly reconnaissance
and escort operations. Over 200 fighters accompany heavy bombers.
Tenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by 12 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters,
bomb Namsang airfield. 12 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit bypass
road bridges at Inailong and Bawgyo, damaging approaches to
the latter. Troops and supply areas are hit at Man Kat, Hsenwi,
Yi-ku, Se-hai, and near Nawnghkio by 36 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters
and P-38 Lightning fighters. 6 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters bomb
cable and pontoons along North riverbank at Na-lang. 6 hit
enemy activity near Twinnge and 5 attack truck dispersal area
and warehouses at Mogok. Transports fly 597 sorties to front
areas and forward bases.
Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Fort Bayard and Samah Bay
areas. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers damage a bridge and
a warehouse, and destroy 2 other buildings at Kentung. 21
P-40 fighters on armed reconnaissance pound targets in Wanling
area. 8 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers knock out bridge at Huizan
and damage another, and 20 other fighters hit targets around
Lohochai, Sinyang and Hankow.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Puerto Princesa. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers hit railroad and highways in San Pedro area.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters hit
Tanamon and Sidate. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, flying small-scale strikes,
hit airfields in South Luzon, on Mindanao, in Northeast Celebes,
and in Central Philippine Islands, and bomb shipyards in North
Borneo.
Seventh Air Force. 13 Guam based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Iwo Jima. During

5 January
1945, 10 more hit the island with individual harassment strikes.
