operations.
Twelfth Air Force. Weather severely curtails operations. XXII
Tactical Air Command fighters and fighter-bombers, flying
just over 100 sorties, hit enemy movement in battle area at
several points from South of Piacenza to North West of Milan.
Medium bombers are grounded. Partisans apprehend Mussolini
who dies before a firing squad on Lake Como.
Fifteenth Air Force. Continued bad weather cancels heavy bomber
operations and limits fighters to escort and weather reconnaissance
missions.
Tenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38
Lightning fighters attack cavalry regiment and supplies in
Nawhok area. 6 others hit bivouac area near Pawngleng. 22
P-47 Thunderbolt fighters are detailed to strike at troops,
artillery positions, trucks, elephants, and carts along and
behind enemy lines in Central Burma. Despite bad weather most
of the fighter-bombers complete missions. Transports make
441 flights to forward areas, landing or dropping 610 tons
of supplies.
Fourteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Paoching airfield and Shaho
railroad yards, knock out bridge near Kaifeng, and damage
bridge West of Showyang. About 80 fighter-bombers attack troops,
airfields, storage facilities, railroad targets, river craft,
trucks, and enemy positions in South and East China, again
concentrating on Fantung area. A B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
claims a freighter sunk in South China Sea.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit targets in Itogon area of
North Luzon. A-20 Havoc light bombers attack Itogon mines
and start fires among huts at Fabrica. Fighter-bombers attack
Balete Pass, Cagayan Valley, Tuguegarao, Trinidad, and Cervantes.
In South Luzon A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers
support ground forces at various points including Batangas
sector and hit targets around Norzagaray, Ipo Dam, Montalban,
New Bosoboso, and along San Andres trail. B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bomb Toshien and several secondary targets. Other
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Kuching while B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters hit Tarakan Island
and targets along Sarawak coast. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
over Celebes bomb Masamba, Malimpoeng, and Mandai airfields.
B-26 Marauder medium bombers sink about 20,000 tons of merchant
shipping in Saigon harbour.
Twentieth Air Force. Approximately 120 United States Army
Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's hit airfields
at Kushira, Kanoya, Miyakonojo, Kokubu, Miyazaki, and Izumi.
The very heavy bombers claim a total of 14 downed fighters.
Seventh Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam hit Param Island during
early morning hours. 12 more attack Param during the afternoon.
20 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters from Saipan sweep Truk, strafing
small vessels and airfields at Param and Moen.
Benito Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, are executed
by Italian partisans as they attempt to flee the country.
Their bodies are then hung by their heels in the public square
of Milan.
