heavy bombers attack 2 tank factories, 4 marshalling yards,
2 airfields, an oil depot, and 3 targets city areas in South
Central Germany. 11 fighters groups on close escort and area
patrols cover the heavy bombers.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th
Bomber Division strikes 4 rail bridges, 4 command centres,
marshalling yard and 9 targets as part of interdiction campaign
against Germany. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division, attack
assigned ground targets, fly armed reconnaissance, and support
8th and 104th Infantry Divisions in Duren area, XIII and XIX
Corps East of the Roer, and VIII, XII, and XX Corps along
the Prum and Saar Rivers.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers during
24-25
February 1945, attack marshalling yards at Villafranca di
Verona, Cittadella, Castelfranco Veneto, Trento, and Turin,
and airfields at Villafranca di Verona and Bergamo. Medium
bombers cut or damage bridges at Vipiteno, Dogna, Ala, and
Campo San Pietro, and railroad fill at San Felice del Benaco.
XXII Tactical Air Command fighters and fighter-bombers are
restricted by ground haze in Po Valley but attack rail lines,
marshalling yards, rolling stock, motor transport, and dumps.
Fifteenth Air Force. More than 600 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb marshalling yards in Amstetten,
Linz (2) Villach (2), and Salzburg, plus Linz benzol plant
and ordnance depot and several targets. Fighters escort and
some afterwards strafe targets in Austria, Southeast Germany,
and West Czechoslovakia. 37 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers strafe
railroad targets in Rosenheim, Muhldorf, Landshut, Augsburg
areas. Routine reconnaissance and supply missions continue.
Tenth Air Force. In joint operations with British and Chinese
army forces, l6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters support British 36th Infantry Division
in Mongmit sector while 31 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support
Chinese 38th and 50th Divisions near Lashio and Namtu, respectively.
Low B-25 Mitchell medium bombers strike knocks out suspension
bridge at Namsang. 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 85 fighter-bombers
blast troop concentrations, supply areas, road traffic, and
general targets behind enemy lines. 600 transport sorties
are completed to forward areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, supported by 5 P-40 fighters,
hit sampans and buildings in Puchi area. 3 B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers and 19 P-40 fighters pound Isuho ferry and attack
river and road traffic from Siangtan to Hengyang. A single
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bombs truck convoys South of
Hengyang. 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers over Gulf of Tonkin
and South China Sea claim damaging hits on 2 vessels. 44 P-51
Mustang fighter-bombers and P-40 fighters hit bridges, river
shipping, troop areas, and motor transport at Kweiyi, Paoching,
and Siangtan, from Lingling to Hengyang and Leiyang, from
Anjen to Chaling, North of Liuchow, and West of Ishan.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Takao. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
hit targets along East Formosa coast. B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers attack troop concentrations on East side of Ipo River
and pound Japanese positions between Ipo and Osboy. B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb Tawau and Labuan airfields.
Twentieth Air Force. General Millard F Harmon, Commanding
General Army Air Forces, Pacific Ocean Areas (AAFPOA) and
Deputy Commander of Twentieth Air Force, is lost near Kwajalein
when his aircraft disappears en route to Washington DC. On
2 March 1945
General Hale, Army Air Forces, Pacific Ocean Areas (AAFPOA
deputy commander for operations, assumes Harmon's positions.
172 B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's bomb urban area of Tokyo.
Around 30 others hit alternates and targets. This is XXI Bomber
Command's largest mission to date and its first 3 wing strike
against Japan as the 73rd and 313th Bomber Wings are joined
by the 314th.
Seventh Air Force. 9 Guam based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit blockhouses, and
mortar and rocket launching positions on North West part of
Iwo Jima. 8 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, flying separate
harassment strikes, pound airfields on Chichi Jima during
25-
26 February
1945.
