Eighth Air Force. Allied ground assault across lower Rhine
begins. 1,240 heavy bombers attack 10 assigned marshalling
yards East of the Rhine primary targets and 4 other marshalling
yards as secondary targets and targets, along with a power
station, aluminium works, and benzol plant. 14 P-51 Mustang
fighter-bombers groups give close and area support, flying
355 effective sorties.
Ninth Air Force. Approximately 800 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) medium bombers and light bombers strike 7 command
centres, a factory, and targets including several antiaircraft
positions. Attacks on command centres are aimed at obstructing
movement of reinforcements to the front. Fighters escort 9th
Bomber Division, fly patrols and armed reconnaissance, attack
assigned ground targets, support United States III and VII
Corps Southeast of Honnef and East of Wied River and XII and
XX Corps astride and on West bank of the Rhine River between
Mainz and Worms.
Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light
bombers attack loading points and crossings along Po River
during
22-23
March 1945. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters concentrate on command
and general movement in lower Brenner area during the day.
The fighter-bombers also blast several dumps in Central Po
Valley. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit bridges, railroad
fills, and bridge approaches in Brenner area at Matrei am
Brenner, Pordenone, Salorno, San Michele all' Adige, Vo Sinistro,
Longarone, and Perca.
Fifteenth Air Force. 658 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers with fighters escort hit oil refineries at Ruhland,
and at Vienna, marshalling yards at Budejovice, Gmund, Sankt
Polten and Sankt Valentin, and tank works at Sankt Valentin,
plus scattered targets. Over 40 P-38 Lightning fighters and
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers fly reconnaissance.
Tenth Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47
Thunderbolt fighters support Chinese ground forces, bomb troop,
positions at Nampongpang and Nakang. 16 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters
hit targets along roads from Mong Nawng to Wan Sing to Kunlong.
11 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit quarters at Monglawng while
3 others attack supply dumps at Laihka. 9 B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers bomb command routes, creating 2 road blocks behind
enemy lines. In large-scale air supply operations, 536 sorties
are flown.
Fourteenth Air Force. 28 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Tsinan railroad shops and
Yellow River bridge. 5 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb town
areas, storage facilities, and targets at Sinsiang and Wuyang
and chiefly in the Hsiangcheng area. 50 fighter-bombers attack
troops, horses, and river, road, and railroad targets in North
Indochina and South and East China.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighters hit the Visayan Islands,
bombing Cebu City, hitting defences on Cebu and other islands,
and bomb Antamok mines, Balete Pass, and Tangadon areas, along
with several other targets. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers also
hit targets on Mindanao. Fighter-bombers attack Takao.
Seventh Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers from Iwo Jima bomb and strafe
various targets on Chichi Jima, Haha Jima, and Ani Jima. During
23-
24 March
1945, 5 Guam based B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, flying single
bomber strikes, pound Susaki airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. An 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
bomber strike is called off due to weather.
