Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. Air attacks in preparation for lower Rhine River crossing by Allied ground forces continue. 1,284 heavy bombers hit 4 airfields and 3 marshalling yards East of Frankfurt Main, 10 military encampments in the Ruhr, and 2 city areas nearby. 9 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers groups fly support and strafe aircraft at several airfields.

Ninth Air Force. Almost 800 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers, A-26 Invader light bombers, and B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb 9 command centres and a marshalling yard East of the Rhine River plus 7 towns, antiaircraft positions, and a target as part of interdiction program to impede movement of supplies and troops. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division, attack railroads and other assigned targets, fly patrols and armed reconnaissance, support United States 1st and 9th Infantry Divisions Southeast of Honnef and along the Wied River, co-operate with XII Corps as it begins crossing Rhine in Mainz, Oppenheim areas and with XX Corps which begins attack on Ludwigshafen.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers and A-26 Invader light bombers during 21-22 March 1945, continue intruder raids concentrating on Po River crossings in the East Po Valley. During the day P-47 Thunderbolt fighters blast rail lines, trains and other command targets, especially in East Po Valley and areas to the North. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers destroy bridge at Brixlegg, severely damage Steinach bridge, and hit bridge approaches at Muhlberg and town of Matreiam Brenner. Weather prevents successful attacks on 2 targets in North Italy.

Fifteenth Air Force. 680 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers with fighters escort hit Ruhland and Kralupy and Vltava oil refineries some heavy bombers on Ruhland raid bomb Lauta aluminium works to the North, a railroad command and ordnance depot, a marshalling yard, and 2 oil refineries at Vienna, marshalling yards at Graz, Wels, Zeltweg, Klagenfurt, and Neratovice, and scattered targets. Reconnaissance and reconnaissance escort missions are also flown.

Tenth Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighter-bombers support Chinese ground forces near Hsipaw. 12 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 41 fighter-bombers hit numerous targets along and immediately behind enemy lines. Troops, supplies, and command are attacked and 2 bridges are knocked out. 547 air supply sorties are flown to forward areas.

Fourteenth Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) fighter-bombers and a single B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack railroad traffic and railroad yards in and around Shihkiachwang, at Chukiatsi, and from Sinsiang to Chenghsien.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers along with Marine aircraft hit Cebu City, defences at several locations on Cebu Island, and targets on Inampulugan Island nearby. On Luzon B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and fighters continue to hit numerous objectives, chiefly Balete Pass, Tangadon, San Fernando, and Batangas areas. Other B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Tainan and Okayama airfields, destroying several hangars, planes, and gun positions.

Twentieth Air Force. 76 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's, operating in 2 waves, blast storage dumps at Rangoon.

Seventh Air Force. 16 Iwo based United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers bomb and strafe weather station, fuel storage, and radar installations on Chichi Jima. Later in the day 13 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam bomb Susaki airfield. 20 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Angaur bomb Cebu Island. During 22-23 March 1945, 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam make individual raids on Susaki airfield.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Canewdon.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Epping, Fairfield.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Harlow.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Hoo, near Strood.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Stock.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Boreham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Leyton.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Brightlingsea.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Bradwell.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dagenham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit South Woodham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dagenham.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Yarmouth.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dartford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Southminster.
