Eighth Air Force. More than 550 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) heavy bombers hit 3 marshalling yards, rail bridge,
rail junction and other railroad facilities in Southeast Germany
and North West Czechoslovakia. 11 fighters groups give close
and area support, encountering over 30 Luftwaffe fighters
and claiming 12 destroyed, including several jets.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) 9th
Bomber Division hits marshalling yards at Ulm, Neu Ulm, and
Gunzburg primary targets, city of Donauworth and target at
Schelklingen. Weather prevents over 70 of the 450 dispatched
aircraft from bombing targets. Fighters fly escort to 9th
Bomber Division, carry out patrols and armed reconnaissance,
bomb radio station, and co-operate with United States VII
Corps in Halle, Dessau area, XII Corps attacking Southeast
from South of Bayreuth, XX Corps in Bamberg, Nurnberg area,
preparing to drive toward Austria, and XIX Corps along the
Elbe River in Magdeburg area.
Twelfth Air Force. During
18-19
April 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light bombers
bomb roads, vehicles, and lights in Bologna, Turin, Milan,
and Mantua areas, and continuing to pound Po River crossings,
hit 8 bridges. Medium bombers bomb bridges in Brenner Pass
and support ground forces at several points including Budrio,
Vignola, and San Martino in Soverzano areas. Fighter-bombers
hit dumps, command, and close support targets in United States
Fifth Army battle areas South and West of Bologna.
Fifteenth Air Force. 619 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers attack rail command in South Germany, Austria,
and North Italy, bombing Rattenberg railroad bridge and marshalling
yards at Lienz, Klagenfurt, Bischofshofen, Linz and Rosenheim,
Avisio viaduct, Vipiteno railroad bridge, antiaircraft batteries
near Grisolera and Santo Stino di Livenza, and several minor
targets. 78 P-38 Lightning fighters dive-bomb marshalling
yard at Weilheim. Other P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang
fighter-bombers fly reconnaissance and reconnaissance escort,
and escort Mediterranean Allied Tactical Air Force (MATAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft.
Tenth Air Force. 14 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38
Lightning fighters hit supplies near Paklu, fuel dump at Hainang,
and bridges near Kunna. 1 bridge is knocked out. 6 other P-38
Lightning fighters attack targets along roads behind enemy
lines. Air supply operations continue as 800 tons of supplies
are landed or dropped in forward areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb railway repair shops at
Taiynan. 3 others attack Bakli Bay targets, 8 B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers attack bridges and rail and road traffic North
and Northeast of Anyang and Northeast of Taiku, damaging or
destroying several locomotives and numerous boxcars. 100 P-40
fighters, P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, and P-47 Thunderbolt
fighters attack town areas, troops, river, road, and rail
traffic, and general targets all over South and East China
and hit a few targets in North Indochina.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers over Formosa bomb Tainan airfield
and Shinchiku town. Numerous missions are flown in support
of ground forces on Luzon, Cebu, and Negros. Other B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb personnel areas at Kabacan, Cagayan, and
along Davao River. Tarakan on Borneo is hit by light B-25
Mitchell medium bombers strike while B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers returning from Indochina coastal sweep bomb Sandakan.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
cover, hit Haimi.
Seventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers from Iwo Jima bomb and strafe
Futamiko. 25 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, based in the Palaus
bomb nearby Arakabesan and Koror. 17 B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers from Guam hit Dublon, Fefan, and Eten. During 19-
20
April 1945, 6 P-61 Black Widow, night
fighters from Iwo Jima, operating singly and at
intervals, bomb and strafe Chichi, Haha, and Muko Jima.
VII Fighter Command. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
fighters from Iwo Jima carry out 106 effective strike sorties
against Atsugi Yokosuka area. 24 aeroplanes are claimed destroyed
in the air and 14 on the ground.
Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers off to bomb Kuril targets abort
due to weather.
