Eighth Air Force. Over 750 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers attack 7 marshalling yards, a rail bridge and
junction, and 2 transformer stations in West Czechoslovakia
and Southeast Bavaria. 13 fighters groups fly escort. 2 other
groups escort Ninth Air Force medium bombers over Germany.
Ninth Air Force. Approximately 590 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers, A-26 Invader light bombers, and A-20
Havoc light bombers attack oil storage at Neuburg an der Donau,
marshalling yards, at Juterbog and Nordlingen, and raid junctions
at Falkenburg and Juterbog. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division,
fly patrols, sweeps, and armed reconnaissance, attack; assigned
targets, and support ground forces including United States
V Corps assaulting Leipzig, VII Corps in Dessau, Halle areas,
5th Armoured Division near Steimke, and 2d Armoured Division
at Magdeburg and other XIX Corps elements astride the Elbe
River South of Barby. Organised Wehrmacht resistance in the
Ruhr pocket ceases.
Twelfth Air Force. During
17-18
April 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) light bombers
pound command in South Po Valley and towns of Vignola, Bazzano,
and Sassuolo in United States Fifth Army battle area. Medium
bombers hit 2 railroad fills and a bridge on the South Brenner
line and troop concentrations on Fifth and British Eighth
Army fronts, South West of Bologna and in Dugnano Paderno
area. Fighter-bombers of XXII Tactical Air Command also concentrate
on support targets in Fifth Army battle area.
Fifteenth Air Force. 473 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers, with escort of 89 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, support
Fifth Army offensive in Bologna area, blasting defensive positions
and command in areas around the city. 78 P-38 Lightning fighters
dive-bomb railroad bridge at Malborghetta Valbruna, while
87 others dive-bomb 2 railroad bridges at and Southeast of
Kolbnitz. P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers sweep Augsburg, Plzen,
and Linz areas, escort reconnaissance missions flown by P-38
Lightning fighters, and escort Mediterranean Allied Tactical
Air Force (MATAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and C-47 Skytrain
transport aircraft on bombing and supply operations.
Tenth Air Force. 21 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38
Lightning fighters attack troop concentration, tanks, artillery
positions, and bivouac area near Man Li and Kongsam. 5 P-61
Black Widow, night fighters hit supply area West of Laihka.
Transports land or drop 806 tons of supplies at forward bases
and front line areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit trucks and other targets
East of Siangtan. 52 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers and P-40
fighters attack river shipping, town areas, rail and road
traffic, tanks, and bridges at several South and East China
locations including Sinhwa, Hengyang, Changsha, Luchai, Paoching,
Kweiyang, Yenkou, Sinning, and Siangtan.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). On Formosa United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Karenko airfield,
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit Tainan, Giran, Toyohara,
Hobi, and Soton airfields, and P-38 Lightning fighters on
sweeps hit rail and road transportation. Fighter-bombers and
A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Balete Pass area and support
ground forces on Luzon, Negros, and Cebu. B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bomb Piso Point. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and
P-38 Lightning fighters hit Tarakan and Sandakan.
Twentieth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's hit Japanese airfields,
as 100 very heavy bombers strike airfields at Tachiarai, Izumi,
Kokubu, Nittagahara, and Kanoya (2), the same targets attacked
on the
17 April
1945.
Seventh Air Force. During 18-
19
April 1945, 3 Iwo Jima based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) P-61 Black Widow, night
fighters flying individual strikes, bomb and strafe
Futamiko and radio station on Chichi Jima.
