Marauder medium bombers bomb Dottesfeld rail bridge, target
at Daun, and 5 other targets in Germany as 9th Bomber Division
starts campaign to isolate the Ruhr. XIX Tactical Air Command
escorts B-26 Marauder medium bombers and flies weather reconnaissance
and armed reconnaissance. IX and XXIX Tactical Air Commands
are grounded because of weather.
Twelfth Air Force. During
17-18
February 1945, United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc
light bombers bomb targets in Po Valley, including towns of
Nogara, Castelfranco Veneto, Modena, Cremona, Bovolone, and
Isola della Scala, bridges at Cittadella and Villafranca in
Lunigiana, and airfields at Ghedi and Villafranca in Lunigiana.
All B-25 Mitchell medium bombers missions abort due to weather
except attack on Ala rail bridge. Fighters and fighter-bombers
fly less than 100 sorties, hitting ammunition dumps and railroad
bridges and lines, mainly in Po Valley.
Fifteenth Air Force. During
17-18
February 1945, 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers drop supplies in North Italy. During
the day 160 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb benzol
plant, main marshalling yard and station at Linz. 20 P-38
Lightning fighters provide escort. Almost 290 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers, with fighters escorts, are recalled because
of weather from missions dispatched against targets in Austria.
Weather also causes recall of 52 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
on strafing mission. A few P-38 Lightning fighters complete
reconnaissance missions but most are recalled as weather worsens.
Tenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers demolish bridges at Namsang and Ke-hsi
Mansam. 30 fighter-bombers support ground forces in Mongmit
Myitson Nabu area. More than 100 fighter-bombers pound troop
concentrations, supplies, vehicles, and other targets immediately
in advance of the southward moving battle line in Burma. Transports
fly 602 sorties to forward areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 25 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
fighter-bombers attack Sinyang railroad yards and airfields
and targets along Pinghan railroad, at Chiuchiang, in Nanking
area, East of Lohochai, and Southeast of Hsuchang. 4 B-24
Liberator heavy bombers over South China Sea claim damage
on 2 vessels.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Takao, Okayama, and Toshien
airfields. P-38 Lightning fighters provide support. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers and fighters pound command targets and targets
throughout Formosa. Medium bombers and fighters continue to
fly numerous missions in support of ground forces on Luzon.
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Labuan airfield.
Twentieth Air Force. 35 Marianas based United States Army
Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's bomb 2
airfields on Moen Island.
Seventh Air Force. 36 Guam based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers dispatched against Iwo
Jima are recalled because of complete cloud cover over the
target. 3 others on armed reconnaissance bomb Marcus. During
18-
19 February
1945, 9 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam individually
strike Chichi Jima.
Eleventh Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly cover sorties for naval force
during its approach to Kurabu Cape.
