Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. More than 300 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Frankfurt Main marshalling yards and several targets including Giessen marshalling yard, Aschaffenburg, and Hanau. Nearly 600 other heavy bombers abort from synthetic oil targets in Germany because of bad cloud conditions. 3 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers groups provide escort and strafe ground targets.

Ninth Air Force. 31 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers strike Mayen rail bridge and target at Reinfeld. Fighters of IX and XIX Tactical Air Command fly patrols, sweeps, and armed reconnaissance. XXIX Tactical Air Command cancels operations due to bad weather.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers bomb bridges at Chiusaforte, Bressanone, Crema, and Dogna. Fighters and fighter-bombers hit command targets in Po Valley and damage bridges at Nervesa della Battaglia, Cittadella, Calliano, Ala, and Pordenone. Also bombed are guns and dumps from South of La Spezia East to battle area below Bologna.

Fifteenth Air Force. Approximately 500 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers attack main marshalling yard, station, and benzol plant at Linz, steel works at Judenburg, tank works at Steyr and Sankt Valentin, marshalling yards at Graz, Wels, Bruck an der Mur, and Villach, plus shipyards and harbours at Fiume, Trieste, and Pula. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers escort heavy bombers, reconnaissance missions, and supply drops, strafe rail lines in Vienna Linz area and aircraft at Ardning and Grafenstein, and fly weather and photo reconnaissance.

Tenth Air Force. 14 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support ground forces in Mongmit-Myitson area. 140 fighter-bombers strike at troop concentrations, supply points, transport, animal concentrations, tanks, and arms and ammunition stores are pounded in North Burma including at Hko-lawng, Hai-pu, Nakyeh, Man Sang, Samlan, Hkummanmao, Mong Lang, Na-leng, Honwo, and Loiyek. 10 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb troops and supplies at Hai-hseng. 603 transport sorties are flown.

Fourteenth Air Force. 30 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Linfen and Yuncheng. A single B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hits railroad targets from Hengyang to Lingling. 27 P-40 fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers attack animal transport, barracks, railroad targets, and town area at Puchi. 16 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters hit Hankow Wuchang area. 37 other fighter-bombers attack railroad yards and targets and road and river traffic near Tsinan, Changsha, and Kweiyi, and at Sinyang, Linfen, and Lung Hai.

Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters support attack airfields, railroad yard, and aluminium plant at Takao. A-20 Havoc light bombers support ground forces in Mariveles area and hit caves and dugouts in hills West of Fort Stotsenburg. A-20 Havoc light bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and fighter-bombers attack Tuguegarao and coastal town of San Fernando. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Miri airfield.

Twentieth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's from Saipan bomb Dublon Island submarine pens.

Seventh Air Force. 42 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Saipan blast defensive installations and bivouac area. 3 others, on armed reconnaissance flight, bomb Marcus. 3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Guam, escorting photo plane over Truk Atoll bomb Param, Uman, and Eten in the atoll. 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Saipan fly individual snooper strikes during 17-18 February 1945, against Chichi Jima.

Eleventh Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers provide air coverage for naval Task Force en route to Paramushiru.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit near Steeple.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Upper Kirby.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Dunton.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Aylesford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Althorne.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Garston Park.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Ilford.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Poplar.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Rawreth.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Lynstead.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Brentwood.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit Willingale.

V-2 rocket launched against England, hit St Mary's at Hoo.
