Eighth Air Force. Almost 1,000 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) heavy bombers attack benzol plants at Dortmund and
Gelsenkirchen, oil refineries at Dortmund and Salzbergen,
Osnabruck, Hamm, and Rheine, Wesel rail bridge, and several
secondaries and targets. 4 fighters groups provide support.
Ninth Air Force. 300 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-26 Marauder medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers
bomb Mayen rail bridge, Rees command centre, Solingen turbo
jet component works, Unna ordnance depot, and a target. Fighters
escort the bombers, fly patrols, sweeps, and armed reconnaissance,
attack bridge, railroads, and other special targets. XIX Tactical
Air Command also supports United States VIII, XII, and XX
Corps West of Prum River, East of Sauer River, and in Saarlautern
area.
Twelfth Air Force. Bad weather grounds medium bombers. Fighter-bombers
cut rail lines at South end of Garda Lake, and bomb ammunition
and fuel dump East of Nervesa della Battaglia and ammunition
dump East of Villafranca in Lunigiana.
Fifteenth Air Force. 630 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers bomb airfields at Regensburg, Landsberg, and Neubiberg,
marshalling yards at Rosenheim, Hall, Innsbruck, Bolzano,
and Vipiteno, plus scattered targets in Austria and North
Italy. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
escort heavy bombers, fly reconnaissance missions, and escort
reconnaissance and supply operations.
Tenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb troops, storage areas, and vehicles
during offensive reconnaissance along roads South of Lashio
and from Hsenwi to Loilem. 31 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters support
ground forces in Myitson area. About 160 fighter-bombers attack
town areas, troop concentrations, artillery positions, transportation
targets, and general targets at Namtu, Wengkau, Hsipaw, Namhsawng-hawng,
Hunhla, Mong Yai, Sinkin, Panghung, Hatka, Na-kyeh, and Panglong
and similar targets at Kyawngsu, Kunsanlek, Namloi, Man-kyawng,
Tonsing, Sam-Lau, and Mong Li. Transports fly 632 sorties
delivering men and supplies to forward bases and dropping
supplies to front line troops.
Fourteenth Air Force. 33 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
fighter-bombers attack airfields in Nanking area, railroad
yards at Hsuchang and Tungpu, and hit rail and river traffic
from Wuhu to Hankow, in Sinsiang area, in Luang Prabang area,
and from Muong Soui to the Mekong River.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
fighters attack vehicles and trains in South part of Formosa.
120 A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
pound Corregidor during early daylight hours. Amphibious and
airborne landings follow and the paratroops soon link up with
the beachhead. A-20 Havoc light bombers and fighter-bombers
also bomb nearby Caballo Island. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
support ground forces in Mariveles area, hit facilities at
Baguio and Santa Fe, and bomb Camalaniugan airfield. P-38
Lightning fighters hit Likanan and Matina airfield. B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers pound Kendari airfield.
Seventh Air Force. 2 Guam based United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers on armed reconnaissance
flight bomb Marcus. 42 sent against Iwo Jima are recalled
due to total cloud cover over the target. During 16-
17
February 1945, 4 Guam based B-24 Liberator heavy bombers,
striking separately, hit Susaki airfield.
