(USAAF) heavy bombers attack 4 oil targets, 2 steel mills
and benzol plant West of Berlin, plus marshalling yard, Wangerooge
Island, and targets. 150 other heavy bombers bomb 3 bridges
in Cologne area. 15 escorting fighters groups battle about
250 fighters, claiming about 100 kills. 4 groups on fighters
sweeps engage over 150 fighters, claiming over 40 destroyed.
Ninth Air Force. 280 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
medium bombers and light bombers strike bridges and command
centres in base area of Ardennes salient and in other areas
of West Germany. Fighters escort 9th Bomber Division and Eighth
Air Force heavy bombers, fly armed reconnaissance and patrols,
attack numerous ground targets, and support United States
First Army in Vielsalm area and United States Third Army around
Diekirch.
Twelfth Air Force. Weather again cancels all combat missions.
Fifteenth Air Force. For sixth consecutive day bad weather
permits only reconnaissance missions.
Tenth Air Force. 12 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit troops, stores area, and knock
out 3 bridges near Nampawng and Hay-ti. 26 fighter-bombers
support ground forces at Si-U and at Mabein. 60 fighter-bombers
pound supply areas, troop concentrations, and general targets
at or near Hsenwi, Se-u, Kongnyaung, Kutkai, Mongmit, Manai,
and Kawnghka. Transports fly 487 sorties to forward areas.
Fourteenth Air Force. 27 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, supported by 45 P-51 Mustang
fighter-bombers and P-40 fighters, pound Hankow. 8 enemy aeroplanes
are claimed destroyed. 7 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit
targets at and West of Kengtung. 42 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters,
P-40 fighters, and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers attack airfields
at Wuchang and Hankow. 17 Japanese aeroplanes are claimed
destroyed. 21 P-40 fighters and P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
hit targets in Wanting area. 5 P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers
blast trucks and buildings at Shanhsien. 8 others attack shipping
on the Yangtze near Anking.
Far East Air Force (FEAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Aparri airfield while supporting
P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers destroy several parked aircraft.
A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb Clark Field destroying numerous
parked aeroplanes, while B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit
troop concentrations at Cabanatuan. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers,
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, A-20 Havoc light bombers, and
fighter-bombers over wide areas of Luzon hit tanks, trucks,
and other vehicles near Norzagaray, Masbate, Tartaro, Bulac,
Banglos, and San Felipe bomb bridge North of Bocaue hit airfields
at Tuguegarao, Malabang, Batangas, and Silay; bomb Cotabato
supply area and attack numerous other targets. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers bomb Goeroea area.
Twentieth Air Force. 54 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber's, out of Chengtu, bomb air
installations at Kagi while 1 very heavy bomber bombs Heito.
22 others hit alternates and targets at several points, among
them Taichu airfield and Hengyang. 40 B-29 Superfortress heavy
bomber's from the Marianas bomb Mitsubishi aircraft plant
at Nagoya. Over 20 others hit alternates and targets.
Seventh Air Force. 22 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Saipan and 21 from Guam
bomb airfields on Moen. 9 P-38 Lightning fighters escort the
Saipan based heavy bombers. 12 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
from Guam pound airfield on Iwo Jima. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers from the Marianas fly snooper strikes against Iwo
Jima airfields during 14-
