(NATBF) bombs Formia and Itri as diversion to naval bombardment
of Formia and Gaeta. XII A Support Command fighter-bombers
attack roads and bridges in Mignano Ceprano area while other
Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighter-bombers
hit shipping in Split harbour. Fighters strafe road and rail
targets in Rome La Spezia area and vessels, radio stations,
and gun emplacements off coast of Albania.
Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Villarperosa ballbearing
works at Turin, and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit
Genoa Ansaldo steel works. P-38 Lightning fighters provide
escort.
Fifth Air Force. 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers, escorted
by P-38 Lightning fighters and P-47 Thunderbolt fighters,
pound airfield at Alexishafen, destroying at least 12 enemy
aeroplanes. United States fighters claim destruction of 10-15
interceptors in combat. Other fighters claim over 20 aircraft
shot down over Sek Harbour, Markham River Valley, and Lae.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb fuel dump and shipping in
Rein Bay area, and P-40 fighters bomb Gasmata dumps. B-24
Liberator heavy bombers on patrol claim sinking of a destroyer
near Kavieng.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Kieta and hit Buka airfield.
20 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Kara and Kahili airfields.
P-39 fighters join Navy aircraft in strikes on Kara and on
Ballale Island airfields.
