The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancasters, Halifaxes, Mosquitos carried out intensive raid on Gelsenkirchen (Central Ruhr) 24 bombers lost.

In Sicily. The Allied invasion of Sicily, codenamed Operation Husky, was a major World War II campaign, in which the Allies took Sicily from the Axis (Italy and Nazi Germany). It was a large scale amphibious and airborne operation, followed by six weeks of land combat.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 8-9 July 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Catania, Gerbini, and Comiso airfields, and throughout the following day B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and fighters attack other targets in Sicily, including Sciacca and Biscari airfields, Gerbini satellite field, and Cape Passero Island radar stations. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) planes hit Sciacca and Milo airfields during 8-9 July 1943, and on 9 July 1943 hit Milo and Biscari airfields, Sciacca, Porto Empedocle Headquarters at Taormina, junction Northeast of Gela, Canicatti area, and targets.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at Maleme, Comiso, and Taormina. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Sciacca landing ground and Biscari airfield and dispersal areas. P-40 fighters escort bombers over Castelvetrano and Milo airfields. This pre-invasion air bombardment of Sicily provides air superiority over the enemy. British and United States airborne contingents are dropped on the island during 9-10 July 1943 to help facilitate amphibious assault of seaborne troops which are to land on morning of 10 July 1943. This is first major airborne operation to be undertaken by Allies in World War II, and subsequently becomes subject of intensive study.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb railroad bridge on the Mu River between Ywataung and Monywa, scoring 2 direct hits and leaving the bridge temporarily unusable.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit forces in vicinity of Old Bobdubi, Malolo, and Busama. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit landing fields on Timor, Dili, and Cape Chater.

Thirteenth Air Force. During 8-9 July 1943, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield, Buin, and Poporang. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and several fighters sent against forces near Vella Lavella Island fail to locate target and strafe Buki and Ganongga and a destroyer beached on Southeast Kolombangara.
