Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitos fighter-bombers attacked Duisburg. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Stirlings heavy bombers carried out minelaying operations in the Frisians, no aircraft lost.

In Sicily. It was announced that the capture of Acireale by the British 8th Army.
In the Mediterranean. Castelammare di Stabia in Gulf of Naples and railway bridges at Cape Vaticano (Italy) bombarded by Royal Navy.

457 British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancasters and Halifaxes carried out extensive raids on the twin Rhineland towns of Mannheim Ludwigshaven, for the loss of nine aircraft.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb crossroads North of Messina, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Catanzaro and Soverato River bridges, B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack Angitola River bridges, P-40 fighters sweep over South Sardinia, and P-38 Lightning fighters hit lighthouse and other targets in South Italy. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) bombers hit Gesso road junction. Fighters concentrate on highways and junctions and also hit rail sidings and gun positions in areas around Linguagossa, Floresta, Falcone, Patti, Orlando, Novara di Sicilia, and Milazzo. United States troops reach Torrenuovo, and, to the South, drive enemy back to Simeto River between Cesaro and Randazzo.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Divieto and nearby tunnel West of Spadafora San Martino, and attack special points in battle area of Northeast Sicily. P-40 fighters hit shipping at Messina, Milazzo, and Palmi.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Salamaua, Lae, Nuk Nuk, Somoa harbour at mouth of Francisco River, barge near Reiss Point, and bridges on Bogadjim-Ramu road, Barges and machine gun positions along Borgen Bay, installations at Unea Island, and targets at Alilit are bombed. Amboina is thoroughly pounded.

Thirteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers with fighters cover, bomb Vila. Shortly there after 22 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers strike the same target.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers flies photo reconnaissance over various Kiska sites.
