Eighth Air Force. More than 350 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) heavy bombers attack city and industrial areas of
Bremen and Kriegsmarine U-boat yards at Vegesack. Nearly 30
United States aircraft are lost in the main attack on Bremen.
On this mission the Eighth uses, for first time, airborne
transmitters (Carpet equipment) to jam German radar. Over
140 medium bombers are recalled from missions to bomb airfields
of Chievres and Lille, Vendeville due to thick haze and generally
unsuitable weather.
Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bomb Tatoi and Eleusis airfields at Athens, airfields
at Kastelli and Heraklion, and Maritsa airfield on Rhodes.
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers also hit Eleusis airfield. P-38
Lightning fighters fly convoy cover, patrols, and sweeps over
the Aegean Sea. Weather prevents XII A Support Command from
operating. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF)
and Desert Air Force (DAF) hit bridge at Minturno and road
junction and military concentration at Termoli.
Fourteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, supported by 20 P-40 fighters,
bomb Gia Lam Airfield. While on ferry mission over the Hump,
3 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Tengchung, scoring hits
on warehouses, barracks, and Headquarters area.
Fifth Air Force. A single United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bomber on armed reconnaissance bombs
Cape Gloucester airfield.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-40 fighters sink barge
off West coast of Choiseul Island.
