Events On This Day

It was announced first air train fully loaded glider to cross any ocean towed from Canada to Britain by a plane of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) Transport Command.

In Australasia. Allied warships bombarded Bairoko Harbour (New Georgia) and Vila Harbour (Kolombangara Island). American forces landed at Rice Anchorage, New Georgia Island, and at Zanana, near Munda, after American warships had shelled lap bases on both sides of Kula Gulf.

Russian Front. Battle of Kursk The Wehrmacht ground forces launched a new offensive in Kursk, Orel and Bielgorod sectors, 586 Wehrmacht panzers tanks and 203 Luftwaffe disabled or destroyed.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Villacidro airfield and Catania during 4-5 July 1943. Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) fighters, medium bombers, and heavy bombers hit main and satellite airfields at Gerbini and radar stations at Marsala and Licata. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers and medium bombers hit Sciacca and airfields at Trapani, Comiso and Biscari. Northwest African Coastal Air Force (NACAF) aeroplanes maintain sea patrol, reconnaissance, and convoy escort.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack harbour, harbour installations, railway yards, and oil storage at Messina. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Sciacca and Biscari airfields. P-40 fighters fly uneventful sea patrol. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers strike railroad yards at Catania.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe airfields at Salamaua, Komiatum Track, and Headquarters areas at Kela and Salamaua.

Thirteenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers over Buin fail to find shipping and bomb Munda and Ballale Island instead.
