At Cairo Conference President Roosevelt decides on General
Eisenhower as supreme allied commander for OVERLORD.
Eighth Air Force. Around 550 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) heavy bombers are dispatched to attack airfields at
Bordeaux, Cognac, La Rochelle, and Saint-Jean-d,Angely, and
industries at Paris. Cloud conditions prevent bombing of targets
except for 3 heavy bombers that attack airfields at Bordeaux
and Cognac. 9 aircraft are lost on the mission.
Ninth Air Force. 52 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26
Marauder medium bombers bomb Ligescourt, Campagne-les-Hesdin,
and Saint-Josse. 200 others are forced to abandon mission
because of heavy cloud cover over targets, including
V-weapon
sites which the Ninth had scheduled to attack for the first
time. Ninth Air Force P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers (354th
Fighter Squadron) fly first escort mission, accompanying Eighth
Air Force heavy bombers in raid against targets in areas near
Amiens.
Mediterranean Allied Air Forces (MAAF). Combined Chiefs of
Staff issues directive for organisation of Mediterranean Allied
Air Forces consolidating British and United States forces
of Mediterranean Air Command and Northwest African Air Forces
(NAAF).
Twelfth Air Force. Weather hampers medium bombers operations,
but B-25 Mitchell medium bombers manage to bomb bridge at
Pescara and marshalling yard and shipyards at Split. United
States fighter-bombers and fighters (and a number of other
Allied aeroplanes) hit gun positions South of Chieti, vessel
in Poljud harbour (near Split), trains and trucks West of
Aquino, bridges near Mignano and Ladispoli, town of Arezzo,
airfields at Piombino and Aviano, and building South of Garda
Bake.
Tenth Air Force During 5-
6
December 1943 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers mine waters in
Moulmein area while 5 others lay mines in Rangoon River.
Fourteenth Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters over Changte area damage several large supply
sampans near Ansiang and strafe various targets in Tehshan
and Hsutu Lake areas. More than 20 other P-40 fighters on
patrols over Changte area attack numerous boats and other
targets throughout the nearby lake region.
Fifth Air Force. 40 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Cape Gloucester. A-20 Havoc light
bombers destroy small craft off New Britain. Other A-20 Havoc
light bombers hit enemy forces in Finschhafen area. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and P-40 fighters
attack targets along Bogadjim Road.
Thirteenth Air Force. 23 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 20 Navy dive bombers hit
Monoitu, Aitara Mission, and Mosigetta area. Fighter patrols
hit several areas on Bougainville and on Shortland, including
Chabai, Numa Numa, Mosigetta, Monoitu, and Faisi Island.
