missions against Cologne and Duisburg, no aircraft losses.
In Sicily. Catania and Paterno captured by the British 8th
Army. The island of Ustica occupied by Americans forces.
In the Mediterranean. Allied forces Naples pounded.
Russian Front. The Wehrmacht ground forces bastions of Orel
and Byelgorod taken by storm. Marshal Stalin ordered the firing
of 12 salvoes of 120 Moscow guns in celebration.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Tactical
Air Force (NATAF) fighters, light bombers, and medium bombers
attack troops, roads, and gun positions at Adrano and Troina
and surrounding areas in support of Allied ground forces,
hit motor transport behind enemy lines in Sicily and on toe
of Italy, and sink or damage over 20 small vessels and barges
at Milazzo and in Straits of Messina. Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, operating
in 2 forces, hit Messina docks and railroad yards. B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers bomb Guspini switching station, and P-40 fighters,
after escorting the B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, attack and
probably sink U-boat off South West Sardinia. United States
forces open assault on San Fratello ridge, and further inland
gain positions overlooking Troina. Enemy withdraws from town
during night. British 13 Corps overruns Paterno, Misterbianco,
and Catania, British 30 Corps continues toward Adrano.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb town, roads, and road junctions
of Francavilla. P-40 fighters attack Messina harbour and shipping
in the Straits of Messina.
Fifth Air Force. More than 30 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
pound barges near Madang and at Alexishafen, and hit Nuru
River bridge and towns of Bogadjim and Saidor. A single B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bombs Finschhafen while another hits
Vitu Islands. Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm A Moore takes command
of newly formed Second Air Task Force based at recently constructed
advance airfield at Tsili Tsili. Strikes from here will facilitate
operations against Lae.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb shore of Rekata Bay West
of Brokeiello Point area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and
Navy fighters strafe barges on Northeast coast of Gizo Island.
Munda airfield, principal objective of Central Solomons campaign,
is taken by XIV Corps forces after 12 continuous days of fierce
fighting in jungle area.
