Fourteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 11 P-40 fighters pound Tien
Ho airfield at Canton. 3 of 15 intercepting Zeros are shot
down.
Fifth Air Force. Allied offensive against Lae begins as forces
land at Hopoi and mouth of Buso River. B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers support landings by pounding Lae airfield, B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers hit Hopoi area and bomb airfields at Cape Gloucester,
and A-20 Havoc light bombers and Royal Australian Air Force
(RAAF) planes hit Gasmata airfield. Supporting P-38 Lightning
fighters intercept more than 100 enemy fighters and bombers,
which are airborne despite the attacks on airfields, and claim
20 shot down.
Thirteenth Air Force. 23 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Dulo Cove area. 9 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers, 15 Army Air Force fighters, and 20 Navy
fighters hit Ballale Island airfield.
