Eighth Air Force. 282 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers attack industrial areas of Frankfurt, Main,
Wiesbaden, and Saarlautern, marshalling yards at Sarreguemines
and Saarbrucken, and Saint Dizier, Robinson airfield. The
raid on Frankfurt is followed by a night raid on that city
by more than 350 The British Royal Air Force (RAF) heavy bombers.
Twelfth Air Force. Over 100 XII Bomber Command B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers bomb Pisa marshalling yard and Bolzano
bridges. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-26 Marauder medium
bombers attack airfields at Argos, road defiles at Terracina
and Isernia, highway overpass at Mignano, and shipping at
Bastia. Allies now have complete control of Corsica. Northwest
African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) aircraft hit road and
rail junctions on main road North from Capua. XII A Support
Command fighter-bombers hit trains, roads, railroads, and
vehicles near Isernia, Avezzano, Pescara, and Isolella.
Ninth Air Force. Lieutenant Colonel Ray J Stecker becomes
commander of IX Fighter Command.
Fourteenth Air Force. 17 Japanese bombers and 25 Zeros attack
Kweilin airfield. The bombs, dropped from 20,000 ft, fail
to hit target. Fourteenth Air Force fighters fail to make
effective contact with the force.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe barges, small craft,
and villages in Vitu Islands.
Thirteenth Air Force. 23 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, covered by 16 P-38 Lightning
fighters and several Navy F4U Corsair fighter, bomb Kahili airfield. 20-30
fighters intercept, and a running battle occurs between Bougainville
and Vella Lavella. United States fighters and bombers claim
9 fighters downed. No American losses are suffered. 4 P-39
fighters and 4 Corsairs sink 16 barges in strike along West
coast of Choiseul 1. The P-39 fighters are especially effective
because of their nose cannon.
