B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit shipyards at Le Trait.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb
Naples submarine base. B-26 Marauder medium bombers and B-25
Mitchell medium bombers hit railroad bridge at Catanzaro and
railroad at Paola. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF)
medium bombers, light bombers, and fighters attack command
targets, gun positions, and storage areas in Milazzo-Adrano-Biancavilla
and Bronte-Riposto-Fiumefreddo areas. A number of Northwest
African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) aircraft hit rail sidings
on toe of Italy and attack shipping off Messina. In Sicily,
British cross Salso River with 2 divisions, while other forces
prepare to drive on Catania and others continue toward Misterbianco.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters attack shipping at Messina and support ground forces
at North end of Mount Etna. United States troops are halted
by fierce opposition at Furiano River and at Troina.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe Itni River area and
hit several villages on Selaroe Island. Single B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers bomb dump area on Francisco River and Cape Gloucester
airfield.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and Navy dive bombers, bomb
Gurasai-Kindu area. Some of the medium bombers also strafe
areas emitting intense small arms fire, silencing it. P-38
Lightning fighters and P-40 fighters claim 11 fighters downed
in series of running battles over Central Solomons.
Eleventh Air Force. Between 0855 and 1846, 153 tons of bombs
are dropped on Kiska, a new one day record. 6 armed weather,
photo and reconnaissance missions, flown by 3 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers, 2 P-40 fighters, and 2 F-5A reconnaissance
aircraft bomb through clouds, take photos and observe fires
in Main Camp and on Little Kiska. Later 48 B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers, 22 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 16 A-24 Banshee
dive bomber, 8 P-40 fighters, and 40 P-38 Lightning fighters
fly 17 bombing and strafing attacks to Kiska. Targets hit
include buildings near radio station, and gun battery area
on North Head. Little Kiska and Segula Island are also strafed.
