fighters on sweep over Sardinia hit Pula and Capo Carbonara
radar installations. A-20 Havoc light bombers, A-36 Apache dive bomber fighters

gun positions throughout toe of Italy, attack airfields at
Crotone and Camigliatello, and hit railway yards at Marina
di Catanzaro and Punta di Staletti, troop concentration near
Santo Stefano d'Aspromonte and road junctions and bridges
at Cosenza. British Eighth Army lands on toe of Italy between
Reggio di Calabria and Villa San Giovanni (Operation BAYTOWN).
Italian government signs surrender terms.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb marshalling yard at Sulmona.
Fierce attacks by enemy fighters account for 6 losses. Heavy
bombers claim 11 enemy fighters destroyed.
Fourteenth Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters and 2 P-38 Lightning fighters blast barracks
area at Pho Lu.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy
bombers and medium bombers blast gun emplacements and terrace
defences in Lae area. Other heavy bombers hit Cape Gloucester
area. Light raids are flown against targets on Ceram and Timor.
Thirteenth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 14 P-40 fighters, and 30
Navy aeroplanes attack Kahili airfield. Vila airfield is bombed
by 5 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 10 Navy aircraft. P-40
fighters strafe Webster Cove wharf.
