Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb docks
and shipping at Tunis and shipping and power plant at La Goulette
harbour. Fighters and medium bombers of Northwest African
Tactical Air Force (NATAF) hit ground forces in areas around
Bedja, Bou Arada, and Mateur. Fighting around Bedja subsides
but enemy forces take Sedjenane.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers dispatched against Naples fail to
reach primary target. Several bomb secondary target, Messina,
while 3 bomb bridges at Banco and Siderno Marina. P-40 fighters
fly fighter-bomber missions along Mareth Line as probing attack
against British 51st Division positions near Mareth is driven
back. German Afrika Korps issues plan for counter-attack from
Mareth Line.
Tenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24
Liberator heavy bombers bomb Mahlwagon marshalling yard and
dock area at Rangoon. 9 others attack Pazundaung railroad
bridge but fail to knock it out. 6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
bomb railroad sheds at Maymyo.
Fifth Air Force Battle of Bismarck Sea continues as heavy
bombers are joined by medium bombers, Light bombers, and fighters
aircraft (United States and Australian) in pounding convoy
as it moves into Huon Gulf. Motor torpedo boat of United States
Seventh Fleet also close with the enemy. By the end of the
day all 8 transports have been sunk and Allied aircraft have
destroyed 4 of the 8 destroyers and a large number of fighters
aircraft covering the convoy.
Eleventh Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters sweep Kiska dropping demolition and fragmentation
bombs. Admiral Kinkaid, Commanding Officer Alaska Defence
Command tables Kiska invasion plan and substitutes an Attu
invasion plan.
