Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Army Air Force (USAAF) aircraft raided Abbeville and St. Omer. Heavy night raid on Hamburg.

North Africa. British troops in Tunisia captured a ridge of Jebel Mansour.

Russian Front. Soviet troops occupied Krasny-Liman, in Ukraine, and Kuschevka. South of Rostov.

German radio announced three day mourning for 6th Army at Stalingrad.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers attack Gabes and vessels between Tunisia and Sicily. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit bridges over river North of Maknassy, damaging railroad bridge. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit tanks and vehicles further North, and attack a large howitzer and numerous trucks East of Ousseltia.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers hit harbour at Palermo and Messina: 1 bombs Plati.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers continue to strike along Mubo-Komiatum Track. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Gasmata runway, Simpson Harbour, Cape Gazelle area, and airfield at Cape Gloucester. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Dobo on Wamar.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-39 fighters, P-38 Lightning fighters, and P-40 fighters, along with Navy and Marine planes, attack Munda airfield.
