made heavy raid on Rangoon docks.
Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Andrews assumes command of
ETOUSA. North African Theatre of Operations, United States
Army (NATOUSA) is established with General Eisenhower as commander.
Eighth Air Force. 32 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers attack marshalling yard, port area and industries
in Emden, and a few strike at industries in Osnabruck. Bombers
are opposed for first time by twin-engine fighters

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Gabes airfields and a landing
ground West of the town. Weather prevents completion of a
medium bombers mission against landing ground further South
West. Fighters escort bombers and C-47 Skytrain transport
aircraft and fly reconnaissance over battle area.
Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers and 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
bomb Myitnge bridge South of Mandalay, damaging South approach.
3 other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Myitnge railroad
shops.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20
Havoc light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb
Lae airfield and harbour and nearby antiaircraft positions,
and hit forces in Mubo, Komiatum, Zaka, and Wau areas. Japanese
forces begin retreating in disorder from Wau area toward Mubo.
Heavy bombers hit airfields at Rabaul, Gasmata, and Cape Gloucester,
score hits on vessel off Arawe, and attack small boats at
Lorengau, sinking 1 boat.
Thirteenth Air Force. A single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy
bombers joins Navy aircraft in pounding Kahili airfield. Other
Navy aeroplanes hit Munda airfield.
Eleventh Air Force. The weather reconnaissance plane over
Kiska, jumped by 3 fighters, shoots 1 down. It is followed
by 3 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, 3 B-24 Liberator
heavy bombers, 3 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 4 P-38 Lightning
fighters, and 8 P-40 fighters. The B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
blast North Head submarine base, and score near misses on
cargo ship. The B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit vicinity
of Main Camp area. 3 of 5 float-planes which intercept are
shot down. The P-40 fighters strafe Kiska ground installation
and sight a fighters strip South West of Salmon Lagoon. 2
Amchitka fighters patrols are flown. The first also strafes
gun emplacements on Vega Point. 5 enemy bombers strike Amchitka.
