In Sicily. It was announced that the capture of Assoro, Nissoria,
Mistretta, San Stefano, and Catenanuova fall of Centuripe
to the British 78th Division., Troina and Cerami to American
forces. The British 8th Army entered Catanian Plain in the
west.
In Australasia. Progress made against stiff opposition at
Munda in New Georgia and Salamaua in New Guinea .
Russian Front. Bitter fighting continued around Orel. Russians
captured Stish Wehrmacht ground forces ceased attacks in Donetz
area due to heavy losses.
The British Admiralty announced that in the Atlantic recently
a concentration of 25-30 U-boats had been dispersed, two being
destroyed.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Tactical
Air Force (NATAF) light bombers hit tactical targets in battle
area in Sicily. Fighters, light bombers, and medium bombers
hit shipping in Straits of Messina and at Milazzo and attack
Adrano and Biancavilla and gun emplacements and bridges in
the area. United States forces continue East along North coast
toward Furiano River. At Troina, further inland, enemy continues
firm resistance.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb Adrano and its highway approaches.
Over 300 P-40 fighters, largest Ninth Air Force total to date,
attack harbours and shipping at Milazzo and Messina, and give
direct support to British ground forces in Catania-Bronte
area.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers,
and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb barges, small craft,
villages, grounded planes, trails, and military camps at numerous
points, including areas in or around Bogadjim, Salamaua, Manokwari,
and Larat and along Bubui, Masaweng, Mindjim, and Kofebi Rivers
and Bogadjim Road. Also bombed are West coast of Borgen Bay
and island in Marien Harbour.
Eleventh Air Force. 6 attack missions 2 of which abort are
flown to Kiska by B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, and P-40 fighters.
Numerous targets hit and strafed include installations at
North Head and South Head.
