Events On This Day

In Sicily. It was announced that the islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo were now occupied by Allies. Capizzi captured by American forces. Coastal road at Taormina, and Cape Molini 17 miles to the South bombarded by Royal Navy British destroyers.

French airfields of Merville, Poix, Tricqueville, Abbeville, St. Omer, Amiens and Lille attacked by Allied air force aircraft.

Eighth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers under heavy fighters escort carry out raids on airfields at Merville, Abbeville, Poix, Saint-Omer and Triqueville. Lille and Amiens are bombed by The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers, also fighters escorted, in conjunction with United States raids.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Adrano. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, light bombers, and medium bombers hit Paterno, Santa Maria di Licondia, and Centuripe, general area around Paterno, and vessels in Milazzo Orlando area. United States ground forces in Sicily prepare to attack East along coast, and further inland press toward Troina. British, to the South, are fiercely opposed West of Regalbuto.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters fly escort missions and hit shipping in Milazzo area.

Tenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers mine Rangoon River during 31 July 1943 to 1 August 1943.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Finschhafen area and barges at Hanisch Harbour and Mange. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and A-20 Havoc light bombers blast several barges in Cape Gloucester area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Waingapoe.

Thirteenth Air Force. 17 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters and P-39 fighters join 90 plus Navy and Marine aircraft in pounding guns and defensive positions on Bibolo Hill as Allied ground forces close in on Munda airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, P-40 fighters, and Navy aircraft attack Vila airfield.
