Eighth Air Force. 5 forces totalling 319 B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers are dispatched to attack German Air Force airfields
in France. Because of unfavourable cloud conditions only part
of one force is able to attack a target. 16 B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers hit Denain, Prouvy airfield and 18 bomb Mardyck
airfield. Over 100 medium bombers attack Foret D'Hesdin and
power station at Mazingarbe.
Twelfth Air Force. Almost 200 United States Army Air Force
(USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell
medium bombers of XII Bomber Command bomb marshalling yards
at Bologna, Trento, Bolzano, and Cancello Arnone. Bombers
and fighters escorting the B-25 Mitchell medium bombers claim
28 enemy aeroplanes shot down. Tactical aircraft (including
The British Royal Air Force (RAF) and Ninth Air Force aeroplanes)
hit gun positions and other targets on Italian toe, bomb rail
command at Bova Marina, Locri, Marina di Monasterace, Siderno
Marina, Lamezia, and Catanzaro, and attack barges in Golfo
di Sant' Eufemia and ammunition dump at SaPri.
Fourteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 5 P-40 fighters bomb Kowloon
area and attack shipping off Stonecutter's Island and in Lai
Chi Kok area.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort,
attack shipping at Wewak harbour, claiming 1 vessel sunk and
2 left aflame. 10 enemy interceptors are claimed destroyed.
Barrage balloons offer some protection to the enemy ships.
This is first Army Air Force observation of Japanese use of
such balloons in Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA).
Thirteenth Air Force. 24 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 60 plus Navy aircraft pound
Vila, hitting antiaircraft and artillery positions and area
East of Ringa Cove. 18 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 20
P-40 fighters and P-39 fighters, and more than 60 Navy planes
attack Kahili. Shore installations, the airfield, and bridges
North of the strip are hit.
