Twelfth Air Force. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force
(NATBF) light bombers and medium bombers hit gun positions
and ammunition dump on Eighth Army front, railroad facilities
at Aquila, and coast road at Terracina. At night light bombers
hit Zara and Penna Point. XII A Support Command and Desert
Air Force (DAF) fighters and fighter-bombers attack gun positions
and ammunition dumps along British Eighth Army front, hit
gun positions South of Isernia, bomb Fondi, and attack several
bridges and junctions in advance of United States Fifth Army
front. Numerous trucks and a train also are strafed.
Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bomb aircraft factory and surrounding industrial complex
at Wiener Neustadt. The heavy bombers claim over 50 attacking
fighters destroyed. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Ancona
marshalling yard. B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb Civitavecchia
harbour and miss railroad bridge near Amelia. P-38 Lightning
fighters escort the heavy bombers and the B-26 Marauder medium
bombers.
Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 12 P-40 fighters pound docks
and warehouses at Shasi.
Fifth Air Force. In direct support of Allied landings on Bougainville,
75 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with escort of 70 P-38 Lightning
fighters, attack Rabaul airfields and harbour. 3 destroyers
and 8 merchant vessels are sunk or left sinking. The medium
bombers and fighters claim 12 aircraft destroyed on the ground
and 68 shot down. Antiaircraft and air opposition is the strongest
thus far encountered by the Fifth Air Force. 21 United States
aeroplanes are lost. P-39 fighters pound road in Bogadjim
area. A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe command routes
near Fortification Point.

B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield.
