Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 539 B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, including 11 Pathfinders, 9 using new H2X blind bombing device (first time on a United States mission) and 2 using H2S, attack port of Wilhelmshaven. This is first Eighth Air Force blind bombing mission in which aiming point is completely destroyed and is also the Eighth's first 500 plane mission. P-38 Lightning fighters escort the heavy bombers almost the entire trip and see their first real European Theatre of Operations (ETO) combat, claiming 3 aircraft shot down.

Ninth Air Force. 71 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb airfields at Saint-Andre-de-L'Eure, France. 71 attack Triqueville airfield, and 65 bomb Schiphol airfield.

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, escorted by P-38 Lightning fighters, attack Araxos airfield. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) hits dump at Cupello, railway station at Cesano, road junction at Alfedena, town areas of Ceprano and Palmoli, and numerous vehicles. XII A Support Command and Desert Air Force (DAF) fighters and fighter-bombers attack gun positions at Cupello, landing grounds near Pescara and Ancona, airfield at Cisterna di Latina, Ceccano railroad yards, town of Pozzilli, roads in Venafro Cassino area, and several bridges and junctions. Many of the day's missions are flown in direct support of British Eighth Army's advance.

Fifteenth Air Force. The 2 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers groups of the Fifteenth Air Force are transferred to the Twelfth. P-38 Lightning fighters escort B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on raid against Araxos airfield. The target is well covered and several parked aeroplanes are destroyed.

Fourteenth Air Force. 21 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, supported by 30 fighters, pound Kowloon Docks. 4 fighters are claimed shot down. 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 12 P-40 fighters pound various targets in Shihshow Hwajung Owchihkow area. 8 P-40 fighters bomb runways and installations at Lashio.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit barges between Alexishafen and Bogadjim. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers fly light strikes against shipping (sinking 1 vessel) between Talasea and Cape Gloucester, and bomb Boela.

Thirteenth Air Force. 19 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack convoy about 150 miles Southeast of Mussau Island. Heavy bombers claim hits on 3 vessels.
