Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the ex-American destroyer HMS Beverley which was sunk by the Kriegsmarine U-188 after the U-boat came into contact with the convoy ON-176 Southwest of Iceland on 11 April 1943.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitoes made dusk raid on railway workshops at Thionville.

North Africa. United States Army (USA) and French troops in North Tunisia advanced towards Bizerta.

Russian Front. Soviet Headquarters announced the failure of a six day Wehrmacht ground force offensive offensive in area of Novorossisk.

In Australasia. Fifty Japanese air force bombers and fighters raiding Darwin were intercepted by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) Spitfires.

Wilhelm Krüger sometimes referred to as The Heydrich of Poland was the Chief of Gestapo operations in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II. Like Reinhard Heydrich, Wilhelm Krüger was assassinated by resistance fighters.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Bad weather restricts Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) to reconnaissance missions. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters hit tank and troop concentrations near Massicault and Tebourba and fly battle area reconnaissance as United States II Corps occupies Kef en Nsour while enemy withdraws toward Bizerte.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters attack shipping off Tunisian coast.

Fourteenth Air Force. 17 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters intercept 30-40 fighters near Lingling and in a running battle to just North of Changsha claim at least 7 Zeroes downed. 1 P-40 is shot down.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Penfoei. Others unsuccessfully attack vessel off Toeal. A single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs dock area at Finschhafen.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers on harassing strikes hit Rekata Bay area and Munda airfield. P-38 Lightning fighters and P-39 fighters join Navy aircraft in pounding runway area at Munda.

Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, 8 P-40 fighters, and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters fly bombing, photo and attack missions to Kiska. Targets include North Head, South Head and buildings and antiaircraft gun batteries on Gertrude Cove.
