The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers raided targets in
Western Germany.
North Africa. New Afrika Corps attack developed in Sejenane
area of Northern Tunisia. Allied aircraft bombed targets at
Tunis and near Mareth.
In the Mediterranean. Allied fighters and bombers from Malta
attacked Lampedusa aerodrome.
In Australasia. Japanese air force fighters raiding aerodrome
at Port Darwin were intercepted by the British Royal Air Force
(RAF) Spitfires now operating in Australia.
Italian Eighth Army returned home from the Russian front.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb
shipping and harbour area at Palermo. B-26 Marauder medium
bombers attack bridges and flak positions at La Hencha. Northwest
African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters hit troops, tanks,
and motor transport South of Mateur and Northeast of Bedja
as enemy renews attack along Mateur-Taberka road near Jefna.
Tenth Air Force. More than 20 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
pound targets in Burma. 7 splinter part of Ahlone docks and
destroy a nearby warehouse, 6 hit Mahlwagon roundhouse, and
9 attack bridge at Pazundaung, tearing up its South approach.
6 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with P-40 escort, hit camp
and storage area at Lamaing while 24 B-25 Mitchell medium
bombers, also with fighters escort, pound Myitkyina.
Fifth Air Force. Battle of the Bismarck Sea begins. B-17 Flying
Fortress heavy bombers and B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack
convoy of 8 transports and 8 destroyers as it proceeds from
Rabaul towards Huon Gulf. The heavy bombers first hit the
convoy North of New Britain. The last air strike of the day
takes place West North West of Umboi Island between New Guinea
and New Britain. By the end of the day, half of the transports
are sunk or sinking.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
P-40 fighters, P-38 Lightning fighters,and a single PB4Y Privateer
patrol bomber fly photo reconnaissance mission over Munda
airfield.
