In Sicily. Canadians captured Regalbuto. 90,000 prisoners
taken to date. It was announced that the opening of the Allied
general offensive along whole front.
Russian Front. In the Donbas, South West of Voroshilovgrad,
Wehrmacht ground forces attacks made no headway. Russians
continued to advance on Orel sector.
In China. President of China, Lin Sen, died, General Chiang
Kai-shek became Acting President,
740 British Royal Air Force (RAF) Lancasters, Halifaxes, Stirlings,
Wellingtons, Mosquitos attacked Hamburg again, 30 bombers
were lost. Reconnaissance revealed 1,700 acres of the city
devastated.
4th Antisubmarine Squadron sinks the Kriegsmarine U-boat,
U-706
in East Atlantic, 46-15N 10-25W.
Eighth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium
bombers attack Merville, Saint-Omer and Fort Rouge airfields.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF).
Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, light
bombers, and medium bombers hit trucks, dump and road junction
in Northeast Sicily, docks and shipping at Milazzo, Messina
and in Reggio di Calabria area, and targets (mainly motor
transport) from Barcellona South to Adrano. In Sicily, United
States ground forces push slowly West while British troops
gain control of Regalbuto and fight indecisively in streets
of Centuripe.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40
fighters attack shipping in Straits of Messina and off Milazzo.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb supply dumps on shores
of Hansa Bay and targets along Francisco River. A-20 Havoc
light bombers hit Buiambun and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers
pound barges from Lae to Bogadjim, from Lae to Kepler Point,
and from Bubui River to Lepsius Point. B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers bomb Lae harbour, Salamaua, and West shore of Voco
Point.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers,
P-40 fighters, and Navy fighters pound shores of Bairoko harbour.
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
P-40 fighters and Navy F4U Corsair fighter hit supply area
on West side of Webster Cove.
Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters hit Kiska in 2 waves bombing
and strafing North Head, and coast guns on Little Kiska, scoring
several hits. 1 or 2 enemy aircraft over Attu cannot be intercepted
due to weather.
Eighth Air Force. General Kepner becomes Commanding General,
VIII Fighter Command.
