Events On This Day

Another major night raid on Lorient and surrounding areas by The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers.

In Libya. In patrol operations The British eighth Army forward troops crossed Tunisian frontier.

Russian Front. New Soviet offensive West of Voronezh; Novy Oskol occupied Kropotkin in North Caucasus also captured.

In Australasia. Strong Japanese patrols repulsed near Mubo, New Guinea.

Twelfth Air Force. 3 consecutive waves of B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack docks and shipping at Bizerte. B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit El Aouina airfield while others on shipping strike between Tunisia and Sicily severely damage a cargo liner. Fighters escort bombers and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft and carry out reconnaissance.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound area around Mubo, concentrating on positions on Garrison and Mat Hill. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb runways at Cape Gloucester and Gasmata.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-39 fighters hit bivouac area at Vila, Kolombangara and airfield at Munda Point. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb Kahili airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. Weather reconnaissance over Kiska and patrol over Rat Island, flown by 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 2 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters, are recalled early due to weather. All other missions cancelled.
