Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. Weather prevents completion of XII Bomber Command B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers missions against Bologna marshalling yard and Bolzano railroad bridge, except for 1 heavy bomber which bombs Bolzano. Tactical aircraft operations are also severely curtailed by weather. Fighter-bombers bomb and strafe motor transport in Benevento, Castera area. United States Fifth Army is ready for assault on Naples and Avellino. Castellamare di Stabia, Nocera, and Sala Consilina are taken.

Fifth Air Force. The Wewak area is again hit, the 40 attacking B-24 Liberator heavy bombers being escorted by 29 P-38 Lightning fighters which claim 8 fighters shot down. A-20 Havoc light bombers and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Vengeances attack Finschhafen and Lae area. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and P-39 fighters hit road near Bogadjim.

Thirteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) SB-24 Liberator heavy bombers snoopers attack convoy in North Solomons waters and claim several damaging hits. The convoy reverses its course.
