first effective results with rockets. 105 P-47 Thunderbolt

time on mission, escort the B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers
into Germany; other P-47 Thunderbolt fighters, going more
than 30 miles deeper into Germany than they have penetrated
before, meet the returning bombers. They surprise about 60
Luftwaffe fighters and destroy 9 of them; one P-47 Thunderbolt
fighters is lost. 17 B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit Zeebrugge
coke ovens. Medium bombers mission to bomb Triqueville airfield
aborts because of failure to meet fighters escort in bad weather.
Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic
Air Force (NASAF) fighters sweep over South Sardinia. Northwest
African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) light bombers hit Regalbuto,
Milazzo, and Centuripe. A-36 Apache dive bomber and P-40 fighters hit heavy
traffic on Troina Randazzo road, bridges and roads North and
West of Cesaro, landing ground at Falcone, and buildings near
Randazzo. United States Seventh Army takes Nicosia and pushes
toward Santo Stefano di Camastra. British Eighth Army takes
Agira. Allied cargo vessels begin arriving at Palermo, and
General Alexander, 15 Army Group Commanding General, moves
his Headquarters to Sicily.
Ninth Air Force. Approximately 100 United States Army Air
Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters hit shipping at Catania and Santa
Teresa, fly patrol over Straits of Messina and bomb encampments.
Fourteenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with escort of 9 P-40 fighters,
bomb Taikoo Docks at Hong Kong.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers attack barges and fuel dump between
Cape Raoult and Rein Bay, and hit airfields at Cape Gloucester
and 2 destroyers offshore. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers
bomb Unea Island and unsuccessfully attack shipping in Saint
George Channel. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Manokwari,
Larat, and Boela. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit town of
Lautem and airfield at Cape Chater.
Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and Navy aircraft hit gun positions
and other targets at Webster Cove.
