Events On This Day

Light naval forces, including destroyers HMS Goathland and HMS Albrighton, attacked heavily escorted enemy convoy off Ushant and hit two supply ships and two escort vessels.

Large-scale mining operations by The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers in Baltic caused loss the of 23 bombers. Soviet air force aircraft again raided Königsberg.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters attack 2 vessels off Northeast Tunisia in Straits of Sicily. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Tunis shipping while B-26 Marauder medium bombers bomb landing grounds at Mabouban and Mabtouha. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) aircraft bomb concentrations near Saint-Cyprien and Ksar Tyr, shipping off Tunis, and numerous positions and vehicles along Tunisian battle line and surrounding areas as United States 9th Division continues, West astride the Sedjenane River and 1st and 34th Division continue to face fierce opposition South of Jefna in Sidi Meftah area.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack harbour at Naples and ferry slip at Messina. Gunners claim 5 fighters destroyed. P-40 fighters escort bombers and attack troops in battle area North of Enfidaville.

Tenth Air Force. 9 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters intercept 21 medium bombers and 21 fighters about 100 miles South West of Kunming. The P-40 fighters claim 11 aeroplanes shot down. 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound docks at Monywa. 10 others attack river traffic in Katha vicinity.

Fourteenth Air Force. About 20 Japanese medium bombers and a like number of fighters attack airfields at Kunming. High winds prevent bombing accuracy and little damage is done to the airfield. Several Chinese villagers near the field are killed. General Glenn, recently arrived to become General Chennault's Chiefs of Staff, is wounded. Defending P-40 fighters shoot down 10 aircraft.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack 2 vessels North North West of Dobo. Single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit buildings North of Finschhafen airfield, Wilwilan village, and targets along coast of Northeast New Guinea from Nankina River to Mur.

Thirteenth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers continue snooper missions over Bougainville, bombing airfield at Kahili.
