Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. During day and night Twelfth Air Force fighters, light bombers, and medium bombers and aircraft of associated The British Royal Air Force (RAF) units of Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) attack enemy positions, gun emplacements, roads, vehicles, railroad facilities, and targets in Lanciano, Fossacesia, Castelfrentano, Casoli area B-25 Mitchell medium bombers also bomb Porto Civitanova and Sibenik.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, bomb marshalling yard and bridges at Rimini. Other B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit bridges and marshalling yard at Grizzana and bridge approach on Reno River 25 miles Southwest of Bologna.

Tenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, covered by P-51 Mustang fighter-bombers, strike Insein. Japanese interceptors attack fiercely, shooting down 6 fighters and 3 heavy bombers. United States aeroplanes claim 13 fighters downed.

Fourteenth Air Force. 4 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers on sea sweeps attack docks and warehouses at port of Swatow and hit convoy of 9 vessels heading South toward Amoy. The medium bombers claim 1 destroyer sunk and a destroyer and freighter damaged by direct hits.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers blast airfield at Boram and town and harbour at Wewak claiming 15 aeroplanes and 12 barges destroyed. Medium bombers also bomb town of Finschhafen.

Thirteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Queen Carola Harbour. 20 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters support, attack Buka airfield. 19 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Bonis airfield. A few B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-34 Lexington bomber attack areas at mouth of Mobiai River and Mutupina Point.

Seventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Canton Island and Nukufetau bomb Mille.

Zone of Interior. General Wolfe becomes Commanding General XX.
