Events On This Day

North Africa. In Mejez-el-Bab sector the First Army was engaged in ceaseless attacks and counter-attacks. French troops made progress towards Pont du Fahs.

Twelfth Air Force. General Quesada is named Commanding General XII Fighter Command but had actually assumed office in mid March.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit shipping West of Zembra Island off Cap Bon. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, bomb Villacidro airfield. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) planes (fighters, Light bombers, and Medium bombers) hit numerous tactical targets in Northeast Tunisia, including Sidi Ahmed airfield and troops, tanks, trucks, and gun positions at Massicault, on Pont-du-Fahs road, Ksar Tyr, Bir Meherga, and other points along battle line

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters bomb and strafe concentrations North and North West of Enfidaville.

Tenth Air Force. 19 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb engine sheds at Thazi. P-40 fighters hit positions South of Sarenghkyet.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb and strafe forces in Green's Hill-Mubo area. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb village near Beru. Heavy bombers, operating individually, attack vessels North North West of Dobo, Nabire, Cape Gloucester, Cape Goltz, Gasmata, New Britain, and small vessels and targets in Marienberg, Wewak, and Finschhafen areas.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Vila and airfield on Ballale Island. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit Kahili airfield.

Eleventh Air Force. 1 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers unsuccessfully investigates reported submarine 4 miles west of Bay Islands. 4 P-38 Lightning fighters bomb Main Camp, then scout Buldir.
