Events On This Day

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) medium bombers and heavy bombers hit airfields at Ponte Olivo, Biscari, and Comiso. P-40 fighters attack gun emplacements, trucks, and troops on Southeast coast of Pantelleria. P-38 Lightning fighters hit Porto Ponte Romano shipping, Tirso power dam, Golfo Aranci harbour, and Villacidro airfield. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) P-40 fighters bomb Pantelleria.

Fifth Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Madang town area and airfield.

Seventh Air Force. 3 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers from Canton Island fly reconnaissance-bombing mission over Abemama. Bombs are dropped on barracks area.

Eleventh Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 11 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers , flying air-ground support, bomb enemy positions. 2 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 12 P-38 Lightning fighters fly air cover sorties and also patrol and strafe Attu. Kiska is covered by 3 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft photo sorties and 3 attack missions, flown by 9 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 16 P-40 fighters. Targets include gun emplacements on North Head and East end of runway.
