Events On This Day

The British Admiralty announced the loss of the trawler HMS Moravia which was mined and sunk in the North Sea south-east of Aldeburgh on 14 March 1943.

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) made night raid on Duisburg and other targets in the Ruhr.

North Africa. Extensive attacks by the British Eighth Army troops on positions of El Hamma forced Afrika Corps troops withdrawal from Mareth zone.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Grombalia area. Other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers of Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) fail to complete missions because of weather. P-39 fighters destroy several trucks in Maknassy-Mezzouna area. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, Light bombers, and medium bombers bomb fuel dump at Oudref, roads and railway near Cekhira, docks at Sfax, and airfield at Djebel Tebaga. Fighters strafe vehicles during armed reconnaissance between Faid and Gabes.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack Mareth area, dropping over 57,000 lbs of bombs during 2 strikes. P-40 fighters fly fighter-bomber and strafing missions, destroying or damaging over 50 military transport vehicles, tanks, and gun emplacements. Intense ground fire downs several United States fighters. Following aerial bombardment, allied ground forces renew assault on Mareth Line.

Tenth Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers mine Rangoon River during 26-27 March 1943. 6 others fly diversion raid on city of Rangoon, scoring hits on Mingaladon airfield, between central railroad station and Pazundaung Creek, and in Syriam area.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers attack shipping, harbour and town area at Wewak. A-20 Havoc light bombers pound forces and targets in Mubo, Malahang, and Salamaua area. A single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers bombs Finschhafen and unsuccessfully attacks ship East of Talasea.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields on Nauru Island.

Eleventh Air Force. A reconnaissance aircraft covers Attu, Agattu, Semichi and Alaid where cabin is strafed. Upon report of Navy contacts with enemy surface force (Battle of Komandorskies), 13 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 11 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 8 P-38 Lightning fighters are ordered to hit the enemy, reported 150 miles West of Cape Wrangell (Attu). Because of mechanical failures and weather, aeroplanes cannot take off until 6 hours after surface force is sighted. Thus, Japanese ships have fled when aircraft arrive at interception point. Some of the returning B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb radar site, hangar, and Main Camp area on Kiska.
