Fifth Air Force. United States 1st Marine Division lands at
Cape Gloucester at 0746. 270 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers,
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, and A-20 Havoc light bombers
plaster the area between the Cape and Borgen Bay from 0714
to 1614. Enemy aircraft attacking the landing force sink a
destroyer and cause considerable damage to other ships, but
P-38 Lightning fighters, P-40 fighters, and P-47 Thunderbolt
fighters claim over 60 aeroplanes shot down over the invasion
area.

B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with 34 fighters, attack Cape
Saint George area. 25 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound bivouac
and supply area at Kahili. B-34 Lexington bomber on reconnaissance
bomb Chivaroi and Faisi.
Seventh Air Force. 16 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, staging through Tarawa, bomb
Wotje. P-39 fighters fly reconnaissance and strafing missions
over Mille.
