Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack vessel near Zara. A-36 Apache dive bomber attack targets in Italy, hitting factory and railroad at Anagni, harbour and railroad facilities at Civitavecchia, bridge at Pontecorvo, and several gun positions and vehicles.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers hit viaducts at Zoagli and Recco and attack, but fail to hit, marshalling yard at Poggibonsi.

Fourteenth Air Force. 10 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters strafe buildings on Pailochi airfield and sink nearby river boat. 2 locomotives North of Yoyang are also destroyed. 4 P-40 fighters bomb Phu Tho airfield, and strafe airfields at Dong Cuong. 36 Japanese aeroplanes attack Suichwan airfield, destroying 1 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, the alert shack, and 3 fuel dumps. United States interceptors claim 4 of the attackers shot down. 1 P-40 is lost.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers attack positions in Cape Gloucester battle zone. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit villages and tracks from Rottock Bay to Riebeck Bay and strafe barges along New Britain's South coast. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields at lloskins. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb Madang and hit coastal targets along Huon Peninsula. B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Alexishafen. P-47 Thunderbolt fighters strafe road near Bogia.

Thirteenth Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb seaplane anchorage at Buka, strafe antiaircraft guns Southeast of Ramandata, bomb Kahili supply dumps, and attack Kieta bivouac and other targets in the area. A few B-34 Lexington bomber hit barges at Ambitle and Anir. 16 P-38 Lightning fighters join 70 Navy dive bombers in strikes on Buka antiaircraft positions. About 40 Allied fighters sweep Rabaul area, claiming 17 aircraft shot down.
