Events On This Day

The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers made one of wars heaviest night raids on Duisburg.

North Africa. On the First Army front, British infantry captured the whole of Longstop Hill.

In the Mediterranean. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) bombers carry out night attack on airfield at Bari, Italy.

Soviet Government announced suspension of relations with Polish Government in London, following German story of massacre of Polish officers near Smolensk.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). During 25-26 April 1943, Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) Wellingtons bomb Decimomannu, Elmas, and Villacidro airfields. On following afternoon, B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers strike airfield at Grosseto. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb railroads at Mateur and town of Tebourba, while B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters hit shipping near Marettimo and Porto Ponte Romano. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighters, Light bombers, and medium bombers hit area North West of Enfidaville, bomb Soliman South landing ground, hit vessels off Cap Bon, and attack Ksar Tyr, roads in Pont-du-Fahs-Zaghouan-Cheylus area, Massicault area, and numerous positions along battle line in Northeast Tunisia.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb airfields, hangars, and dispersal area at Bari. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers South hit landing ground at Soliman South. The British Royal Air Force (RAF) Liberators, under IX Bomber Control control, hit Bari and Barletta, P-40 fighters, escorting bombers, claim 4 Me 109's destroyed.

Tenth Air Force. 7 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb warehouses WSW of Central railroad station at Rangoon. 7 others blast Thilawa oil refinery, causing heavy damage. 10 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers pound Heho airfield and 16 attack Kanaung airfield.

Fourteenth Air Force. A Japanese force of 12 bombers and 15 fighters hit Yunnani airfield with surprise raid. 5 P-40 fighters and 1 C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft are destroyed. 15 other P-40 fighters are damaged. 5 United States personnel and several Chinese labourers are killed.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Lae and Finschhafen. A single B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers carries out harassing attacks on Arawe, Ubili, and Gasmata.

Eleventh Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 15 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers , 36 P-40 fighters, 21 P-38 Lightning fighters and 1 F-5A reconnaissance aircraft fly 15 missions to Kiska. 24 of the P-40 sorties are flown by Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) pilots. 5 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers abort mission due to weather. Bombs are dropped on North Head runway and nearby area, radar, gun installations, Main Camp and on Little Kiska.

Zone of Interior. Command Wing is activated to assume responsibilities from Headquarters Army Air Force for supervision of Army Airways Communications System (AACS) (established in 1938).
