Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) heavy bombers are assigned role of bombing important German Air Force targets in Operation STARKEY, designed to contain enemy forces in west to prevent their transfer to Eastern Front, and to serve as dress rehearsal in Pas de Calais area for invasion of West Europe. Allies hope to provoke Luftwaffe into prolonged air battle. Medium bombers hit airfields of Triqueville, Bernay, Saint Martin, and Beaumont-le-Roger and the power station at Le Grand-Quevilly.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). approximately 135 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers and 140 P-38 Lightning fighters attack satellite airfields at Foggia. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) fighter-bombers hit trucks South of Sinopoli.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb marshalling yard at Foggia.

Fourteenth Air Force. 8 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Kowloon Docks at Hong Kong.

Southeast Asia. Admiral Mountbatten is appointed Supreme Allied Commander, Southeast Asia.

Fifth Air Force. Nearly 100 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers , and B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers carry out an hour long strike against Hansa Bay area, Nubia, and Awar, and nearby shipping. Small flights of B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack Finschhafen and hit transport off New Hanover. A-20 Havoc light bombers hit Gasmata. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers bomb targets on Timor.

Thirteenth Air Force. 13 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, along with 40 dive bombers and an escort of fighters aircraft, pound barge centres at Webster and Ringa Coves. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, along with 24 fighters, hit Kahili airfield. Other P-40 fighters strafe large motor vessels and a barge in North West part of the Slot.

was used against the Royal Navy's sloop HMS Bideford which was slightly damaged.
