Events On This Day

Eighth Air Force. 36 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) medium bombers raid Caen and Carpiquet airfield.

Northwest African Air Forces (NAAF). Desert Air Force is assigned to Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF), along with American units of Ninth Air Force which have been an operational part of Desert Air Force and Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force. Over 80 Northwest African Strategic Air Force (NASAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escort, bomb Capua airfield. More than 100 fighters-escorted medium bombers hit Grazzanise airfield and satellite field. P-40 fighters bomb Carloforte and strafe South part of Sardinia. Northwest African Tactical Air Force (NATAF) medium bombers and light bombers bomb targets on toe of Italy, including railroad junction at Locri and gun positions at Reggio di Calabria and Villa San Giovanni.

Ninth Air Force. 316th Troop Carrier Group, less 1 Squadron, is transferred to Twelfth Air Force.

Fourteenth Air Force. 15 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with escort of 17 fighters, bomb Kowloon Docles at Hong Kong. 5 Japanese interceptors are shot down. 5 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, supported by 11 P-40 fighters, bomb Tien Ho airfield at Canton in a battle with enemy interceptors 1 P-40 is lost the medium bombers and P-40 fighters claim 5 Zeros downed.

Thirteenth Air Force. 11 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 60 plus Navy dive bombers, escorted by fighters, pound antiaircraft positions and barges at Ringa and Webster Coves and at Nusatuva Island. P-40 fighters strafe 2 large motor boats and a 100 ft steam vessel off Ganongga. 7 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Papatura Ite and supply areas on Papatura Fa. 16 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, with fighters escort, bomb Kahili airfield. P-39 fighters strafe buildings on Gizo Island and at Kolulavabae Inlet.

Eleventh Air Force. The Eleventh's striking power shrinks rapidly as the 36th, 73d, 21st, and 406th Bomber Squadrons are ordered to prepare for departure to Continental United States (CONUS).
