Events On This Day

Twelfth Air Force. Northwest African Tactical Bomber Force (NATBF) bombers, along with Desert Air Force (DAF) fighter-bombers, in close support of British Eighth Army, hit gun positions and defended points in Fossacesia area. XII A Support Command A-36 Apache dive bomber, in support of United States Fifth Army, hit roads north-west of battle line, and bomb harbour at Civitavecchia.

Fifteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escorts, strike Toulon submarine base and Sofia marshalling yard.

Fourteenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and 16 P-40 fighters bomb Hanshow and strafe 1520 small boats North of the city. 2 other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers attack harbour and town of Amoy. 2 direct hits are scored on a docked freighter.

Fifth Air Force. Colonel Neel E Kearby becomes Commanding officer V Fighter Command. 30 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, B-26 Marauder medium bombers, and A-20 Havoc light bombers bomb village of Kalasa. 15 A-20 Havoc light bombers and B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, with P-38 Lightning fighters escorting, hit stores and supplies in Finschhafen area. More than 20 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, supported by P-38 Lightning fighters, bomb Gasmata. 18 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit shipping at Halmahera Island.

Thirteenth Air Force. 25 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb Buka and Chabai. 20 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit Kahili airfield, and 6 others bomb and strafe a possible radio station at Mutupina Point. Fighter patrols strafe Gazelle and Queen Carola Harbours, sinking a barge and damaging a schooner.

Seventh Air Force. 20 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers out of Nanumea bomb Maloelap Atoll, scoring hits on landing ground and cargo vessel.
