of XII A Support Command. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers and
B-26 Marauder medium bombers, operating in 2 forces, attack
Medenine airfield. B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers hit
shipping in Sousse harbour. Fighters escort bombers and attack
vehicles and troop concentrations along battle line in Tunisia.
Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers strike Medenine airfield. P-40 fighters
fly cover and fighter-bomber missions as Axis forces retreat
West from Tripoli.
Tenth Air Force. 492d Bomber Squadron, not previously tried
in battle, borrows 4 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 1 crew
from 436th Squadron and mounts a 9-plane strike against docks
at Rangoon. Hits are scored on the wharves, storage areas,
and a 6,000-ton vessel in the harbour. P-40 fighters bomb
and strafe ammunition stores at Shaduzup.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-17
Flying Fortress heavy bombers bomb airfields, harbour, and
shipping at Rabaul. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers hit supply
dumps in terrace area of Lae. Single B-24 Liberator heavy
bombers attack runways at Cape Gloucester and Gasmata, and
bomb Dili.
Eleventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
heavy bombers and 6 medium bombers attempt attack on Kiska.
Medium bombers abort over Semisopochnoi. Heavy bombers circle
Kiska until weather closes in. 2 aircraft bomb Amchitka harbour
area before United States interceptors, 6 P-38 Lightning fighters
and 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, arrive. 2 P-38 Lightning
fighters return due to mechanical troubles. The others fly
negative search over Kiska.
