Events On This Day

United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Bostons bombers carried out intensive bombing raids on Flushing docks and surrounding areas.

In Libya. The British Eighth Army troops occupied Zauia, West of Tripoli. General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque Chad troops reached Tripoli.

Russian Front. Soviet troops occupied whole of Voronezh, from which the Wehrmacht ground forces had withdrawn. The Russians again offered Friedrich Paulus a chance to surrender. Once again, Adolf Hitler ordered Friedrich Paulus to hold Stalingrad to the death.

In Australasia. United States of America troops captured Kokumbona on Guadalcanal.

Twelfth Air Force. Bad weather cancels heavy bomber and medium bombers missions. Fighters fly reconnaissance, patrol, and C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft escort.

Ninth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-40 fighters carry out fighter-bomber operations. 7th Armoured Division, in pursuit of enemy, reaches Az Zawiyah.

Tenth Air Force. 5 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25 Mitchell medium bombers from Argatala bomb bridge (which the enemy is striving to rebuild) at Myitnge. The South approach to the bridge is destroyed and repair work on the bridge suspended. 3 B-25 Mitchell medium bombers add to destruction at Mandalay marshalling yard, tearing up tracks, wrecking about 75 railroad cars, and setting the freight house aflame. 3 other B-25 Mitchell medium bombers inflict similar damage on marshalling yard at Naba. 6 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers pound Rangoon dock area.

Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) A-20 Havoc light bombers strafe areas in Northeast Papua where there appears to be some enemy movement. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers blast supply dumps and antiaircraft and machine-gun positions around Lae. Single B-24 Liberator heavy bombers attack runways at Gasmata and Cape Gloucester, and runway and beached ship at Finschhafen.

South Pacific (SOPAC). Final phase of Guadalcanal offensive begins with orders of General Patch to begin pursuit of enemy along North West coast toward Cape Esperance. Enemy retreat is to be cut off by landing of a United States battalion just South West of the cape.

Thirteenth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-26 Marauder medium bombers and P-38 Lightning fighters hit airfields at Munda and bomb the wharf at Repirepi, demolishing it. Other P-38 Lightning fighters bomb installations in Rekata Bay area, Santa Isabel Island.

Seventh Air Force. 6 United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, staging through Midway from Oahu, carry out photo reconnaissance mission over Wake Island and drop 60 bombs. They claim 1 fighters shot down.

Eleventh Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) P-38 Lightning fighters are dispatched too late to engage 2 float-planes bombing Amchitka. Reconnaissance is flown over Kiska, Buldir, Semichis, Attu, and Agattu. 1 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers and 4 P-38 Lightning fighters fly 2 patrol missions over Amchitka. An attack mission to Kiska is turned back by weather. B-25 Mitchell medium bombers unsuccessfully search for missing aircraft.

Ardelt-Werke in Breslau, was given a construction contract for five Feuerlilie F-50.
