150 heavy bombers hit port area at Nantes and Vannes, Meucon
and Kerlin, Bastard airfields. 80 heavy bombers strike Rennes,
Saint-Jacques airfields and port area and ships at Nantes.
Medium bombers attack Conches, Evreux and Beauvais, Tille
airfields. Mannheim is attacked by The British Royal Air Force
(RAF), along with a few Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress
heavy bombers, in a night raid.
Twelfth Air Force. XII Bomber Command B-26 Marauder medium
bombers bomb bridges at Cancello Arnone and 3 miles North
East of Capua. Planes of Northwest African Tactical Bomber
Force (NATBF) and XII A Support Command attack motor transport,
roads, railroads, town areas, gun positions, and targets in
areas of San Severino Rota, Avellino, Sarno, Torre Annunziata,
Aversa, Nocera, Resina, Serino, Pompeii, and Camarella.
Fifth Air Force. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) B-25
Mitchell medium bombers bomb and strafe villages in upper
Markham River Valley. P-40 fighters bomb Gasmata.
Thirteenth Air Force. 23 United States Army Air Force (USAAF)
B-24 Liberator heavy bombers, 16 P-38 Lightning fighters,
and 60 Navy dive bombers, covered by Army Air Force, Marine,
Navy, and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) fighters, attack
Kahili. Allied aircraft claim at least 9 fighters shot down.
21 B-24 Liberator heavy bombers bomb area from Stanmore Plantation
to mouth of Vila River. P-39 fighters strafe 2 barges, at
Sasamunga and Malanono, leaving both aflame.
Eleventh Air Force. Admiral Kinkaid issues Operation Plan
9-43 which reorganises Alaskan Army and Navy air strength.
Commanding General Eleventh Air Force becomes Commander of
Task Force 90, composed of Task group 90.1, designated the
Air Striking Unit (comprising 16 medium bombers, 12 heavy
bombers, 100 fighters) and of Task group 90.2, designated
the Air Search Group, a Navy air arm. For operations the Eleventh
is now under the jurisdiction of Commander North Pacific (COMNORPAC)
Forces. There is no administrative change.
